The Battle of Buon Ma Thuot was the opening battle of the Central Highlands Campaign launched by the Liberation Army on March 10, 1975, attacking Buon Ma Thuot Town. The defense force of the II Corps, Army of the Republic of Vietnam was repelled from the town. The efforts to recapture Buon Ma Thuot by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in the subsequent counterattacks all failed. Losing his composure after repeated defeats, on March 14, President Nguyen Van Thieu and the highest-ranking generals of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam made a huge mistake when they decided to withdraw troops throughout the Central Highlands to defend the Central Coast. The hasty and unprepared withdrawal caused an irreparable disaster: the entire force of the II Corps of the Republic of Vietnam with about 60,000 soldiers in the chaotic withdrawal on Highway 7 was pursued by the Liberation Army and almost disintegrated, no longer able to fight.
