There is a huge variety of duck and goose breeds, and you may initially be a little confused when deciding on a particular breed. This film is intended to help self-sufficient people in particular when choosing a breed, because not all breeds of duck and domestic goose meet certain requirements that self-sufficient people necessarily have for their animals. Breeds for self-sufficient people should never be chosen based on performance alone! Robustness, frugality, weather resistance and independent reproduction (natural breeding) are just as important. In the past, humans domesticated not only the native mallard and the native greylag goose, but also other wild species such as the musk duck from South America and the swan goose from China. Depending on the original form, very different breeds with different characteristics have been bred, such as African mute geese and Cholmogory geese from the swan goose, warty ducks from the musk duck, Saxon ducks, Pomeranian ducks, emerald ducks, crested ducks and land ducks from the mallard, runner ducks from the penguin duck and Hungarian curly geese, Pomeranian geese, Franconian, Bavarian and Austrian land geese from the greylag goose. There should be something for everyone. At the beginning of the film, fattening geese and mulard ducks (commercial crossbreeding) are also shown to show the strong contrast between the extremely commercial poultry farming that is common today and the colorful, idyllic poultry farm of the old days! Self-sufficient birds are currently my only hope for species-appropriate livestock farming in the future, because it cannot be that old and resilient breeds can only be found in zoos and petting zoos!
