He enlisted in the ranks of the PM of Sergipe as a soldier-music apprentice in May 1926, becoming an excellent musician. He was promoted to sergeant quartermaster in 1931, at which time he was Music Master of the Salesian College, at the Dom Bosco Oratory. On February 28, 1935, by decree of interventor Augusto Maynard Gomes, he was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant-Regent of the Military Police Music Band. This promotion was intensely celebrated by three other colleagues: José dos Santos Graça, José Batista dos Anjos, José de Oliva Freire and himself, José Machado dos Santos, therefore four Josés and four lieutenants, which is why he composed the dobrado played by several music bands throughout Brazil. José Machado composed other widely performed songs, such as the dobrados “Sílvio Romero”, “Major Mizael Mendonça”, “Professor Olavo”, “17 de Outubro”, “Dom Bosco” and “Desembargador Hunaldo Cardoso”. He also composed the “Valsa Geni”, a beautiful melody dedicated to his wife.
