In this exclusive interview with RSI, Pope Francis talks about his ten years of pontificate. He reveals what would lead him to resign. He talks about the “third world war whose battlefield is Ukraine” and praises Switzerland’s neutrality: “It’s not distilled water, it’s not washing your hands, it’s a vocation of balance, of unity”. And again, his relationship with Ratzinger, his memories of the day of his election, his thoughts on the afterlife. Francis isn’t thinking about resigning, but he explains what would eventually push him to do so: “A tiredness that doesn’t let you see things clearly. The lack of clarity, of knowing how to evaluate situations”. He hasn’t lived in Buenos Aires for ten years. He misses “walking, going down the street” from that time. But he’s fine in Rome, “a unique city”, even if there’s no shortage of worries. We’re “in a world war”, he says. “It started in bits and pieces and now no one can say it’s not global. Because the great powers are all entangled. And the battlefield is Ukraine. Everyone is fighting there.” The Pope says that Putin knows he would like to meet him, “he knows I am available, but there are all imperial interests there, not only of the Russian empire that has been imperial since the time of Peter II, Catherine II, but of the empires of other parts.” Interview by Paolo Rodari.
