The power struggle between the US and China over Taiwan is not trivial. In the skies of the South China Sea, US reconnaissance aircraft and Chinese People’s Liberation Army fighter jets, and at sea, warships are engaged in a tense war of nerves every day. While China has declared that it will go to war if it is to unify Taiwan, the US is openly taking Taiwan’s side. The Taiwan issue is also closely related to our country. Security issues related to the dispatch of US troops to Korea and economic issues surrounding the Taiwan Strait are at stake. We analyzed what direct impact this will have on us and what strategy we should adopt with US defense and security experts, key think tank members, experts on China, Taiwan, and Japan, and domestic foreign affairs and military experts. ■ What is the inside story of China’s strategy to strengthen and soften Taiwan? China is using various strategies toward Taiwan. The so-called soft strategy is to bring Taiwan into the Chinese economic sphere through economic and cultural exchanges and to subjugate Taiwan in the long term. The hard strategy of unification through military force is a representative example. There is also a strategy to spread various rumors within Taiwan to incite internal unrest. We looked into Taiwan’s current situation in dealing with China’s threats while reporting on-site in Kinmen, Taipei, and Gyaohsiung. ■ What are the complicated calculations of neighboring countries? The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a leading American think tank, released a report titled “The First Battle of the Next War: The Taiwan War Game” in January, which discusses a scenario in which China invades Taiwan. Since the report came out after China officially declared that it would not hesitate to wage war to unify Taiwan, it had a big impact and neighboring countries were busy. We met with the author of the CSIS war game report to hear about the reactions of neighboring countries and the predicted scenarios related to our country. We then reported on-site in the Nansei Islands of Japan, which are adjacent to Taiwan, to see what strategies Japan is currently developing to check China. In addition, we analyzed how our country is preparing diplomatically and militarily and how North Korea will move with experts in diplomacy and military affairs. ■ Taiwan Strait and Korea The Taiwan issue is directly related to Korea. The most sensitive issue would be the issue of the dispatch of US troops to Korea in the event of a war between China and Taiwan. The economic issue is not simple either. Currently, 80% of our country's crude oil imports come into Korea through the Taiwan Strait. According to our naval analysis results, if China and Taiwan go to war, our country will suffer an average of 440 billion won in export and import losses per day. We looked for solutions for Korea in this regard. #Current Affairs Planning Window #USA #China #Taiwan #USFK #North Korea #Taiwan Strait #Korea #Taiwan #US #China #CSIS Reporter: Jeong A-yeon Camera: Jo Yeong-cheon Video editing: Seong Dong-hyeok Research: Lee Ran-hee Assistant director: Jin Eui-seon Broadcast date and time: August 8, 2023 (Tuesday) 10 p.m. KBS 1TV / YouTube 'Current Affairs Planning Window' Homepage https://bit.ly/39AXCbF YouTube / @kbssisa Facebook / changkbs WAVVE Search 'Current Affairs Planning Window'
