This week's Parques do Brasil brings you the charms of the Taiamã Ecological Station. After originating in the Serra do Aporé, the Paraguay River flows down to a lowland in the center of the South American continent. It spreads through branches, ebbs, streams and gullies. In some places, it forms lagoons. On its banks, unusual forests appear. And it creates the largest floodplain on the planet: the Pantanal. On an island in the middle of the Paraguay River, the Taiamã Ecological Station is located. Created in 1981, in the municipality of Cáceres, in Mato Grosso, the station protects an area of 11,555 hectares. In the first block, we initially present the station at the end of the dry season, when it is only possible to navigate the main branches of the Paraguay River. During this period, we met some of the most illustrious inhabitants of the Pantanal, such as the tuiuiú and the jaguar. This is the main character of the episode and we will tell stories of several encounters we had with the largest feline in the Americas. At the end of this section and the next, we will present the season in July, when the vegetation is dry, but the water level is high. In this way, we will get to know paradisiacal lagoons and rivers with dark waters, such as the Formoso. We will see pumpkins in full bloom, whose flowers and seeds attract animals such as the black howler monkey, the thrush and fish, such as the pacu. In this section, we will also sail through a region called Campo, an area where fishing is not allowed and which is right next to the island. To close the episode, we will follow the flight of hundreds of snail kites. The Parques do Brasil series is produced through a partnership between EBC, Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/FIOCRUZ and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation – ICMBio.
