The Roman Empire did not last, the Ottoman Empire fell and disappeared, and even the British Empire, on which it was said that the sun never sets, no longer exists today. Therefore, perhaps the simplest lesson from history could be that nothing lasts forever. However, we also look for lessons in history, and the process of the decline of once powerful empires offers an attractive subject for reflection. What causes, factors and circumstances played a decisive role in the disintegration and final demise of vast empires? Can we rationalize individual examples from the more distant or recent past and draw specific conclusions from them? And is it even possible to reverse the process of decline and set things back? These or other questions fascinate historians, archaeologists, political scientists and other social scientists all over the world. Books by authors such as Jared Diamond, Nail Ferguson, but also Arnold Toynbee, who to a greater or lesser extent are or have been devoted to the above topic, are among the most widely read, and the image of the decline or even the uncontrolled fall of an empire is a grateful theme in popular culture as well. In short, the destruction and extinction of man never cease to fascinate. And an equally fascinating view of the history of mankind is offered by a new book from the Premedia publishing house entitled The Fall of Empires, which concentrates in one place the analyses of Slovak and Czech scientists on specific historical chapters from ancient times to the recent past. Jaro Valent from the magazine Historická revue talked to the co-authors and editors of the aforementioned book, historians Branislav Kovár from the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Jakub Drábik from the Anglo-American University in Prague. *Support the History podcast in the Toldo app at https://sme.sk/extradejiny You can also find the History podcast every Sunday on the following platforms: SME app: http://onelink.to/j4vrzy SME.sk website: https://domov.sme.sk/t/5318/dejiny-ty...
