Is euthanasia a mercy killing, an expression of humanity and respect for the patient's right to autonomy and individuality, or a victory of death over life? What is actually moral - to allow life in torment even when the diagnosis does not give any hope, or to allow the person, who is facing this hell, to decide for himself - death or life at any cost? Euthanasia is a very complex issue that concerns both ethics and science, medicine and law. The recommendation of the Council of Europe to all member states is to protect the human rights and dignity of people in the terminal phase of the disease through internal legislation. However, what are the rights of doctors regarding their beliefs and codes? Who has priority - the doctor or the patient? Discussions about euthanasia go so far, that they even come to the point of questioning the meaning and purpose of medicine.
