The standard gauge light rail network was created by expanding the meter gauge Stuttgart tram, which had already been partially running in tunnels since 1966. The network comprises 258 kilometers of lines and 136 kilometers of track. It consists of 15 regular lines, an additional line due to construction work until the end of 2023 and a special line for events, which serve 14 tunnel stops, ten partially covered stops and 169 stops on the surface. Some light rail lines extend beyond the city of Stuttgart to the neighboring communities of Fellbach in the Rems-Murr district, Gerlingen and Remseck am Neckar in the Ludwigsburg district, as well as Leinfelden-Echterdingen and Ostfildern in the Esslingen district.
