Gabriela is studying double bass and is about to take her bachelor's exam at the University of Music and Theater in Munich. The so-called class concert is an important part for all music students. Here, usually at the beginning and end of a semester, they have the opportunity to show off their skills in front of an audience. The concerts are public - in addition to other students, professors from the university and music enthusiasts from the area come. Dealing with stage fright As a musician, Gabriela has to be able to handle stress. She prepares for the performance for months and, if her time allows, practices up to six hours a day. She has to plan her practice time well. After all, she will have to play many more pieces in her upcoming bachelor's exam. Rituals help her to combat the tension before concerts or practical exams: she listens to music, but never the one she is about to play. She prefers Cuban folk music, other fellow students swear by techno or chill-out music. And she moves around, goes outside for a bit and does breathing exercises. Plan your career as a child If you want to be a full-time musician, you make this decision at a young age. Most music students learn their instrument from childhood. And then it's a case of sticking with it! Without passion and love for the instrument, you won't pass the entrance exam for one of the many universities in Germany, let alone the degree course. The curriculum also includes various theoretical subjects. Some are considered very relevant by students, such as ear training or music history. After all, a work can only be interpreted well if you know the history behind it. Most students dread the subject of "form theory". Anyone who graduates from a German music university has a good chance of earning money with music.
