World War II had ended and the Allies were meeting in Potsdam. After the meeting, US President Harry Truman whispered in the ear of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin that the United States now possessed a weapon with tremendous destructive power that could decide the war. Stalin lowered his head a little and did not comment. Truman and his ally Churchill thought that Stalin did not understand that the United States had now acquired an atomic bomb. But the truth is that Stalin knew through his spies in the United States that America and Britain had succeeded in detonating the first nuclear bomb. He knew much more details about the secret Manhattan Project. That was the decisive moment that shaped Stalin’s awareness of the terms of national security in the coming era and the extent of its connection to the possession of nuclear weapons.
