No, spirituality in medicine is NOT about treating a sick person with religious rites or enlightenment. Rather, spiritual care involves pastoral care that takes spiritual or religious aspects into account. After all, seriously ill or dying people often raise questions about the meaning of life and express worries and needs that cannot be "treated" medically. Spiritual care then takes on the role of pain relief and healing. It is also about finding and strengthening resources in sick people. This always applies when people find themselves in extreme situations: when being told of a serious diagnosis, when suffering from chronic illnesses or in a palliative situation. In the lunch session "Spirituality in medicine - a contradiction?", Univ.-Prof. Dr. Arndt Büssing (Professor of Quality of Life, Spirituality and Coping at the University of Witten/Herdecke) and Prof. Dr. Andreas Michalsen (Endowed Professorship for Clinical Naturopathy at the Institute for Social Medicine, Epidemiology and Health Economics at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin) spoke about the approach of spirituality in medicine on October 15, 2024, moderated by Dr. med. Gabriela Stammer (specialist in gynecology and obstetrics).
