His real name was Minobe Kozo. His introductory music was "Icchoiri." He was born in Kanda Kamezumicho, Kanda Ward, Tokyo City (now Sotokanda, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo). He was a member of the Rakugo Association during his lifetime. He is known as one of the leading rakugo performers of the postwar period. His eldest son was Kaneharatei Basho X, and his second son was Kokontei Shincho III. His granddaughter is the actress Shino Ikenami (daughter of the 10th Umao). He ran away from home after a life of debauchery, gambling and drinking. Since then, he never went back to his parents' house, and was not able to see his parents or his brothers who died young. Around this time, he became interested in the performing arts, and started frequenting Tengu-ren (a group of amateur and semi-professional entertainers). Around 1907 (Meiji 40), he became a disciple of San'yutei Ensho (a disciple of San'yutei Koensho II, real name: Hori Zentaro), and took the name San'yutei Moricho, but was still semi-professional, not a professional entertainer. Around the same time, he got a tattoo of a demonic vajra on his left upper arm. Around 1910 (Meiji 43), he became a disciple of San'yutei Koensho II, and took the stage name San'yutei Chota. Shinsho V himself always said that he was a pupil of Tachibana Enkyo IV, who was known as a master at the time. From 1916 to 1917 (Taisho 5 to 6), he went by the name San'yutei Enkiku and became a futatsume. In 1918 (Taisho 7), he moved to Kokontei Shinsho IV and changed his name to Kin'yutei Mataro. Later, in September 1921 (Taisho 10), he took the name Kin'yutei Bakin and was promoted to shin'uchi.
