Oleg Romantsev's team only needed to win, and this was difficult to do, given Oleg Protasov's quick goal. But Spartak showed character and snatched victory in the last minute after a masterpiece free kick by Valery Shmarov into the top corner of Viktor Chanov's goal. Spartak is a 12-time USSR champion, as is Dynamo Kiev. The match was very interesting, both teams could have scored and won.
