The Marais Poitevin Regional Nature Park extends over three departments: Vendée, Charente-Maritime and Deux-Sèvres. 60 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide, it is the second largest wetland in France, after the Camargue. The history of this landscape begins with the monks of the Middle Ages who undertook to drain the marshes to practice agriculture. Then over the centuries, men have continued to shape this territory, to invent a land in the middle of the waters. In the Marais Poitevin, two worlds coexist: the drained marsh which covers half of the surface area, and the wet marsh. It is the latter which has made the reputation of what is today called the "Green Venice". Moreover, it was at the dawn of the 1930s that the first tourists embarked on a timeless journey under this cathedral of greenery. For 20 years, Gaëtan Rogeon has been a boatman, he takes Raphaëlle in a boat to crisscross these canals and tells her the story of the charming village of La Garette, where everything has been designed with water in mind. After living for several years in the La Rochelle area, Guillaume Wacrenier chose to return to live in his grandparents' house in the village of La Laigne, and to develop an activity producing aromatic and medicinal plants. An act of resistance for this fervent defender of the living and an ode to patience. Finally, we leave with Romain Gaillard, in a canoe, to discover another side of these landscapes, wilder, more secret. This local boy has created a blog dedicated to the Marais Poitevin in order to share his passion for this unique and endearing territory.
