Located in the Lozère department, in the Cévennes National Park, the Causse Méjean is one of the 4 large limestone plateaus in France, along with the Larzac, the Causse Noir and the Causse du Sauveterre. With an average altitude of around 1,000 metres, it dazzles walkers with the purity of its lines. We begin our escapades with Daniel André, a local boy and speleologist. A short lesson in geology in situ. The notion of a plateau suggests a flat and monotonous landscape. However, the succession of rounded or elongated reliefs and depressions, the dolomitic chaos, such as at Les Arcs de Saint Pierre, breaks the monotony. These landscapes are not as natural as one might think: it is men who have given them their current appearance, particularly with agropastoralism. In the unreal setting of the Chaos de Nîmes le Vieux, we find Eugénie Frontin. This is the third generation at the Ferme du Veygalier. The opportunity to understand that livestock farming ensures the sustainability of these landscapes that would be completely different without the presence of sheep. Then we set off for one of the extremities of the plateau: the Gorges de la Jonte. With Sandrine Descaves, from the Cévennes National Park, we set off on a hike above the void. This is a paradise for vultures. However, they had completely disappeared in the 1930s; but it was here that the first successful program in the world to reintroduce black vultures was launched more than 30 years ago. Constant Bagnolini, from the Maison des Vultures, was one of the pioneers of this program. You have to listen to him talk about these birds, these spaces, like a poet… Finally, we set off on an underground expedition. The Causses region is indeed the world cradle of speleology.
