Social anxiety is a disorder in which a person, when he is in a social situation, feels intense anxiety or fear from the thought of being noticed and examined by others! This feeling of anxiety can include physiological symptoms such as high heart rate, sweating, nausea, heartache, heart palpitations, dizziness, or even a panic attack. Social anxiety is different from being shy or preferring to be alone. This issue becomes a disorder when it causes a disturbance in a person's life, for example, that person cannot do the things that should be done because of this anxiety. For example, he doesn't go to the places he should go, miss work situations, lose his friendships, and... different methods are used to treat this disorder! One of the main ways of treatment is confrontation. It does not mean that the therapist expects the person to go to a stage and face his fear. Rather, this work includes different stages that in therapy, the person gradually comes into contact with the reality and possible possibilities by imagining the situations that cause him anxiety, and practicing those times. He practices how to manage himself in that situation. Through another work called cognitive restructuring, a person gradually learns to identify anxiety-causing thoughts and change them to a more realistic version of that thought to conclude that his thoughts are not necessarily equal to the truth. One of the solutions that a person can do to help with this issue is to gradually confront himself with an anxiety-provoking situation. For example, if he gets anxiety and fear from speaking in a group, start with small steps like practicing saying a sentence/word to a stranger and increase it little by little. For example, saying "have a nice day" to another person once a week!
