In the round of 16 of the 1990 World Cup in Milan, Rijkaard and his team faced the German national team. There was a scandal when Rijkaard spat at the German striker Rudi Völler when the score was 0:0. The Argentinian referee Loustau assessed the situation in such a way that he held Völler partly responsible for the assault - something that many observers still disagree about today - and showed both players the red card, sending them off. When Völler and Rijkaard then headed towards the dressing room, the television images captured Rijkaard spitting in Völler's direction again. This action was considered one of the defining moments of the Dutch-German rivalry.
