Sine, cosine and tangent are three important terms in trigonometry. But what do they mean? There is a very simple explanation: Sine, cosine and tangent (sin, cos, tan) are side ratios in right-angled triangles. The sine of an angle describes the side ratio of the opposite side and the hypotenuse, the cosine of an angle describes the side ratio of the adjacent side and the hypotenuse and the tangent of an angle can also be expressed as the opposite side divided by the adjacent side.
