Human nature, both in body and soul, is harmonious, beautiful and lives according to its inherent laws. Therefore, God warns man not to commit acts that contradict them, since such actions hurt and disfigure his soul and body. In the language of religion, these warnings are called commandments, and breaking them is sin. Apostle John the Theologian writes: Sin is lawlessness (1 John 3: 4). Thus, by sin, man harms himself, naturally receiving retribution, and does not offend God (St. CASSIAN THE ROMAN says: “Without blasphemy, one cannot ascribe to Him indignation with anger and fury”). This is how St. MARK THE ASCETIX explains the nature of sin and suffering. He wrote: “The Lord has decreed that for every deed, good or evil, a befitting reward should follow naturally, and not by special appointment [from God], as some think, who do not know the spiritual law.” That is, sins and passions ("passions" is a Slavic word meaning suffering) in themselves bring retribution to the sinner. Moreover, as the Venerable ANTHONY THE GREAT warns: "they unite with the tormenting demons." But in Judaism and paganism, and then in Catholicism and Protestantism, the Divine commandments are considered as a law given to man from outside, the violation of which (sin) offends God and entails the corresponding punishment from Him. Patriarch Sergius (Stragorodsky) in this regard cites the words of Saint GREGORY OF NYSSA: "For what necessarily follows, we call retribution by distortion (of meaning)." But it is precisely this legal, crudely anthropomorphic Old Testament understanding of sin that is affirmed in the Catholic Catechism: "Sin is an insult to God." From here comes a profound distortion of the understanding of salvation accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ. If the patristic teaching speaks of salvation as the healing of the damaged nature of man and its deification, then in Catholicism and Protestantism it is interpreted, first of all, as the removal of guilt from man for his sins and deliverance from the torments of hell. Patriarch SERGIUS (STRAGORODSKY) rightly wrote that instead of God they seek impunity. Therefore, salvation is "deliverance from the suffering caused by sin."
