Course: Unknown Province Lecturer: Timofey Zhivotovsky This is the title of a remarkable monograph by Count Mikhail Tolstoy, published in 1860. N. Tolstoy is an outstanding specialist in Pskov history. He combined in his work a story about ancient monuments, the hagiographic history associated with them, as well as individual urban legends, which perhaps survived only thanks to his book. What is most surprising to us is that the majority of the monuments described by Tolstoy, despite all the upheavals of the past century and a half, have survived to this day, and the stories associated with them have even been enriched with new plots. So this journey is mainly built along the boundaries of Tolstoy's guidebook. Perhaps, Pskov is one of the few Russian cities where mid-19th century guidebooks are still relevant.
