Justice has been greatly embarrassed by drug parties among prisoners in the brand new prison of Zaanstad. Photos and videos obtained by this newspaper this week show prisoners in group cells indulging in drugs and possibly also strong drink. The prison parties were filmed by prisoners using secretly smuggled-in smartphones with an internet connection. The footage was distributed from prison to friends and family of prisoners. “This is unacceptable,” responded a shocked spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice and Security. “Immediate action was taken at JC Zaanstad when these signals were received by the Custodial Institutions Agency. This means that an extensive targeted search for telephones and drugs is currently being conducted by the internal assistance team. Prisoners who are recognizable in the images will be given an appropriate punishment. In addition, DJI will investigate how this could have happened and how it can be prevented in the future,” said spokesperson Eveline Petit. The prison in Zaanstad is brand new and should be considered the most secure penal institution in the Netherlands. However, the presence of drugs and also prohibited smartphones proves a completely failing security. According to the justice department, smartphones with internet are particularly undesirable in prisons because their use by inmates entails major security risks.
