An Azerbaijan Airlines plane carrying 67 passengers and crew crashed in Kazakhstan today. Initial reports indicate that 25 people survived. Bystanders in nearby buildings captured footage of the crash, showing the plane making an emergency landing. It exploded on the ground, bursting into flames and sending thick smoke into the sky. Kazakh rescuers are trying to put out the fire at the scene, and 25 survivors have been taken to hospital. The footage shows the damage. Most of the plane was destroyed and burned, with only the tail remaining. The Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport said the crashed plane, an Embraer 190, flight number J2-8243, was en route from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku with 62 passengers and five crew members on board. The pilots were reportedly forced to divert their route due to heavy fog in Grozny, and they were preparing to make an emergency landing in Kazakhstan, but the crash occurred near Aktau airport. In western Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan Airlines posted on social media that its plane had to make an emergency landing about 3 km from the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. Russia's Interfax news agency reported that Kazakhstani authorities have begun investigating the possibilities of the accident, including technical issues that may have been the cause of the accident.
