Spring 1887: Consulting detective Sherlock Holmes is at the end of his rope. For months he has tried to juggle an extremely labor-intensive case and his search for clues in the London underworld. Now Dr. Watson has to bring him home from Lyon after a fainting spell. Holmes only reluctantly agrees to a vacation; at the country estate of the former British officer Hayter in Reigate, whom Watson knows from his time in Afghanistan. - To the delight of the restless Holmes, however, strange things are happening at the lords of the manor of Reigate. He learns of a break-in with an obviously pointless loot, and then a murder takes place on the neighboring Cunninghams' country estate... In the short story "The Reigate Puzzle", the mad workaholism of consulting detective Sherlock Holmes takes its toll; a circumstance with which Arthur Conan Doyle gives his character a good deal of humanity. At the same time, he cleverly plays with the reader's expectations over the course of the story, because Holmes actually does not seem to be at the height of his abilities and powers during the investigation in Reigate, as the first-person narrator Dr. Watson discovers with astonishment and great concern. What is wrong with Holmes? - According to sherlockholmes.fandom.com, "The Reigate Puzzle" first appeared in 1893 in the "Strand Magazine" and was then published a year later with ten other short stories in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes", the second collection of Holmes crime cases. "The Reigate Puzzle" is known in German-speaking countries under a variety of different titles; in addition to "The Landlords of Reigate", there are "The Junkers of Reigate", "The Reigate Riddle", "The Torn Note" (this refers to an indication of the murder investigation), "The Squires of Reigate" and "The Landed Gentry of Reigate". - In our radio play series "Sherlock Holmes Legends" - alongside the central case in Reigate - the storyline moves into the next phase. After several years of searching, Holmes tracks down the missing Rachel Howells and comes one step closer to solving the mysteries of the London underworld. The story begins at Christmas 1886 and continues until Easter 1887.
