Jens and Susanne Olvermann in Hankensbüttel, Lower Saxony, have already had good experiences with the meat from their 70 or so yaks, a robust breed of cattle. Now they want to use their shaggy exotic animals for herd protection. The goal: to ward off wolves and thus protect a flock of sheep. Hardly anything is as controversial as the subject of wolves. The predator is reclaiming large parts of Lower Saxony and, as the population grows, is killing more and more livestock. This also got Jens and Susanne Olvermann thinking, so they are making a first attempt this year: two of their yaks are to look after a flock of sheep as herd protection animals. But the couple do not know how the large yaks get along with the small sheep and whether they can actually keep the wolf away. At the same time, Jens and Susanne Olvermann have a lot of work to do with the yaks. During the wet spring, they have to re-graze part of the herd. They are actually restaurateurs and started breeding yaks primarily so that they could offer regional and special meat in their restaurant. But these special animals now dominate their everyday lives. "Die Nordreportage" accompanies Jens and Susanne Olvermann in a special year in which they want to attract more guests to their restaurant with their regional meat offering from yaks and at the same time make their first attempt to protect a flock of sheep from wolves with their exotic cattle. ______________________________________ The farm stories on ndr.de https://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendunge...
