Giancarlo Spizzirri holds a PhD in health sciences from the School of Medicine at USP. He is a psychiatrist in the multidisciplinary group that provides care to transgender people at the Hospital das Clínicas. It is increasingly understood that many people do not fully identify with the gender assigned at birth. Likewise, it is clear that sexual, romantic and/or affective attraction to another person is not limited to those who experience only the other binary gender. Groups of people who are not embraced by the heteronormative model, recognized by the acronym LGBTQIAP+, represent almost 12% of the Brazilian adult population. These people face stigma, discrimination and violence of all kinds, from an early age in their lives.
