A monster storm produced a dangerous tornado. This thunderstorm was something special. A big twister and lightning with a close strike! It all started in Lubbock / Texas on May 23rd at a fairly cool 15 degrees. After breakfast we went to do laundry and then headed west. The first shower cells quickly formed on the border with New Mexico. These quickly grew into powerful supercells. Thanks to the extremely dry ground, the air quickly became extremely dusty and a dangerous sandstorm developed. We fought our way through this storm to the mesocyclone. The heart of the storm! The RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) was just wrapping itself around the updraft - a few seconds later the tornado made contact with the ground. It was fantastic - an absolute dream. The tornado was quickly enveloped in rain, a spooky atmosphere. In the evening we stood perfectly in front of the storm again and were able to admire the monster before it died just outside Lubbock. A perfect day - moments that we will carry with us forever. PS: There were no injuries and hardly any material damage.
