The final episode of Negative Capability. Today's theme is "daily medicine, eye drops - the best medicine for a person's illness is a person." We often hear the phrase "daily medicine" (time acts as medicine and improves physical condition and the situation of things). This "daily medicine" is also very important in negative capability. Nothing is resolved immediately. Sometimes things will work out if you just endure and try to do something about it. Eye drops are not eye drops that you drop into your eyes. "I am watching your suffering." This is what eye drops are. People cannot endure suffering when no one is watching. They can endure it when there are eyes watching over them. "The best medicine for a person's illness is a person" is a Senegalese proverb. The human brain is designed to think positively. In a survey in the United States, when the question "Is your driving skill above average?" was asked, 93% answered yes. Since there are people who are above average and below average, theoretically the results should be 50% each, but the fact that 93% of people answered that their driving skills are above average shows that people tend to see things positively. The global environment is also at its limit, but it is difficult to take it personally and it does not become serious. I feel that the feeling that "it will be okay" somewhere is working positively in a bad direction. Traditional healers and medicine men are making the most of this positive brain function and exerting negative capabilities. They are prayer men. When Hosho Hazuki looked into what kind of treatments prayer men perform, he found that they do fortune telling, exorcise demons (applying a sticky substance to the sick person's body, chanting a spell, and peeling it off when it dries), and when there is a sick person who cannot be helped, they call family, relatives, and friends to go and get a plant that lives on the top of a distant, high mountain, saying that it has healing powers. When Hosho Hosoki heard about this type of treatment, he laughed at how dubious it was, but he heard that an expert had said, "Modern psychiatrists are knowledgeable about the effects of medicines, but when it comes to treating patients, they are worse than medicine men." In the story above, the important thing is not the effect of the herb itself. It takes time for family and friends to risk long journeys to get the herbs. The patient waits for days with hope. If the patient has high hopes, they may feel that the herb has worked and temporarily feel better. If all goes well, the illness may get better during that time and the patient's natural healing powers may help them recover. And even if the patient dies in the unfortunate event that they are not cured, they will die with gratitude to their family, friends, and acquaintances. The people around them will also feel that they have done what they had to do, and although they will be heartbroken, they will have few regrets. This is what daily medicine and eye drops are all about.
