In the early morning of September 1, 1939, the SMS Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Westerplatte peninsula near Danzig. Almost at the same time, the German Air Force attacked the small town of Wieluń southwest of Łódź. The Second World War began with the German invasion of Poland. From the very beginning, this conflict was fought with great brutality and claimed thousands of civilian victims. Although the Wehrmacht defeated its neighboring country within a few weeks, the campaign did not go as smoothly as expected: the Poles put up fierce resistance. The documentary takes a detailed look at various aspects of the invasion and illustrates the effects of the campaign on the further course of the war.
