Just like when we fall in love with someone, the first years of life with God are always wonderful: it is as if we really found “a treasure hidden in the field”, in exchange for which we happily sell everything we have. Over time, however, love cools and, before we know it, we are dragging ourselves under the weight of a costly and practically unbearable burden. Praying, going to church, doing penance… everything seems to no longer have the same flavor and the same “grace”. (And so it happens with married people.) But why are things like this? Did we make a mistake in choosing God and the vocation He gave us? How can we recover the joy of “first love”—both in our prayer life and in our lives of service to our brothers? This homily was given by Father Paulo Ricardo on July 30, 2023, Sunday, during morning Mass at the Cristo Rei Parish, in Várzea Grande (MT).
