In today’s Gospel, Our Lord clearly shows us that, contrary to what Protestants claim, we will be judged by faith and also by our works. Luther claimed that we would be saved only by faith and, as if that were not enough, he also distorted the concept of faith, reducing this theological virtue to a mere feeling of trust. In other words, it does not matter if someone has built their life on sin and has not repented of it; it is enough to “have faith”, or worse: it is enough to feel that God is with us and will be “faithful”, even if we ourselves live as unfaithful. Unfortunately, this distorted view is not only a mark of the Protestant Reformation, but also a threat to us Catholics today. This homily was given on March 2, 2019, during the morning Mass at the Cristo Rei Parish in Várzea Grande (MT).
