In today’s Gospel, Our Lord makes it clear that He did not come to abolish the Old Testament Law, but rather to bring it to full fulfillment. To understand this, we need to realize that Jewish laws were divided into three types: cultic laws, laws of civil law organization, and the precepts of natural law itself. Christ brought cultic laws to fulfillment on the Cross, in the sacraments, and in the Catholic liturgy. The laws of civil organization were overcome by the need to evangelize the rulers and convert their hearts. Natural law, on the other hand, reached its full fulfillment with the grace of God and the enlightenment of faith, which help us to perceive the truths present in the very being of things. This homily was given on March 15, 2023, during the morning Mass at the Cristo Rei Parish in Várzea Grande (MT).
