For the first time, Georgy Yakovlevich Sedov, at that time still a lieutenant in the Admiralty, came to the Arctic in 1902, when he was assigned to the Hydrographic Expedition of the Arctic Ocean. Sedov's boss, the well-known hydrograph Alexander Ivanovich Varnek, highly valued the young researcher - knowledgeable, courageous and at the same time cautious. During this first expedition, Sedov had a dream of traveling to the North Pole.
