How does the secondary air system work? What are its components? What is secondary air? What is the function of the secondary air pump? What is the function of the secondary air valve? In this article, you will learn about the design and operation of the secondary air system. 00:00 Cold start and harmful substances 01:00 Design and function of the secondary air system 01:41 Secondary air pump and secondary air valve 02:21 Reducing harmful substances In an internal combustion engine, the greatest amount of harmful substances occurs during cold starting. Injecting additional air is a reliable method for reducing emissions when starting a cold engine. To start a cold internal combustion engine, a "rich mixture" is required, i.e. a combustible mixture with excess fuel. While the catalytic converter reaches its operating temperature and lambda regulation begins to operate, a large amount of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons appears. To reduce the amount of these harmful substances during the cold start phase of the engine, oxygen-rich ambient air ("secondary air") is blown into the exhaust manifold directly behind the exhaust valves. This causes the harmful substances to be acidified ("afterburned") and carbon dioxide and water to form. The resulting heat additionally heats the catalytic converter and reduces the time until lambda control takes effect. Read more about this here: https://www.ms-motorservice.com/int/r...
