In Brazil, less than 7% of all cultivated agricultural land is irrigated. One of the reasons for this is the high cost of implementing a satisfactory irrigation system. At the Unesp campus in Lajeado, Botucatu, researcher Edmar Scaloppi develops low-cost irrigation systems that use alternative materials that are easily found, such as plastic bottles and sewage pipes. Scaloppi also shows that it is possible to create alternative models for various types of irrigation systems, such as sprinkling, furrow irrigation, drip irrigation and hydraulic rams.
