Errors, Deficiencies and Truths Regarding Schopenhauer's Philosophy. 34. Cafe Philo, Talk Event. Venue: Solas Coffee & Take Away, Alsancak, Konak, İzmir. Arthur Schopenhauer (February 22, 1788 - September 21, 1860) was a German philosopher. He was born into a wealthy family. He entered the University of Göttingen as a medical student in 1809, and later continued his education in the field of humanities at the same university. During these years, he studied the ideas of Plato and Kant in depth. In 1811, he followed the lectures of Fichte and Schleiermacher at the University of Berlin. He formed a close friendship with Goethe in 1813-1814. During these years, he became interested in Eastern thought and Indian teachings. He spent the last years of his life in Frankfurt, resigned from his university professorship and lived a solitary life. At the center of his thought is The World as Will and Representation, first published in 1819. His other books revolve around these ideas. This book presents a holistic picture of existence. This holistic picture has influenced many thinkers, artists, writers and scientists who have developed our current civilization, and has a power that transcends the boundaries of academia. Many movements and thinkers, from existentialism to Freudianism, have been deeply influenced by Schopenhauer's masterpiece The World as Will and Representation. Schopenhauer's other works are On the Fourfold Root of the Sufficient Ground Principle (1813), Vision and Colors (1816), On the Will in Nature (1836), Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics (1841), Parerga and Paralipomena (1851). Apart from these, Schopenhauer attempted to translate Hume's works on religion, Gracian's works into German, and Kant's works into English, which were rejected by publishing houses. His translation of Gracian into German was published after his death. The Berlin Academy of Sciences invited Schopenhauer to become a member in 1858. Schopenhauer rejected the offer. He died in Frankfurt in 1860. Abdullah Onur Aktaş (b. 1979) completed his BA in the Statistics Department of METU, and his MA and PhD in the Philosophy Department of METU. During his PhD studies, he was at the Schopenhauer Research Center of Johannes Gutenberg University. He is currently a faculty member in the Philosophy Department of Çankırı Karatekin University. In addition to his articles in various national and international journals, he has two books, titled From the Repetition of Separation to the Magic of Uniqueness (Istanbul: Yeni İnsan, 2016) and Nietzsche and Language (Istanbul: Boğaziçi University, 2017).
