The simple man has purity of soul, and a strange trust in God. Simplicity was the state of Adam before the fall, who saw everything pure and clear, because he was clothed with the Grace of God. People have not yet understood this joy of simplicity. In the spiritual life, frugality helps a lot. When I am sent things, I feel a burden and I want to lighten up, or when I have something extra in my cell, I feel like I am wearing a tight vest. If I cannot find a place to give them, it is better to throw them away. Whereas, as soon as I give them, I feel a relief, a freedom. An acquaintance once came to me and said: “Elder, so-and-so gave me these things to bring to you and asked me to pray that his anxiety would go away.” Should he leave him and come to me? Take them and go, I tell him. I am now old, I cannot go and distribute things. Wealth suffocates the soul with the great anxiety of insatiability. When we see a person with great anxiety, distress and sadness, while he has everything, we must know that he lacks God. The greatest and best rich people in the world are those who have no material wealth and are utterly poor, as they are utterly poor in passions. They have no useless things, neither within themselves nor without, materially, but only God, and they rejoice constantly, living the Paradise life from here too, because where God is, there is paradise. The more people move away from the natural life, the simple one, and advance towards luxury, the more human anxiety increases. And the more they move away from God, the more they find rest nowhere. That is why they revolve restlessly even around the moon, like the belt of a machine around a Ferris wheel, because our entire planet cannot contain their excessive worry. May God forgive me, but the world has become a veritable madhouse. People do not think about the afterlife, they only ask for more and more material goods. Fortunately, the afterlife exists. If people lived eternally in this life, there would be no greater hell, the way they have lived their lives. With this anxiety, if they lived eight hundred, nine hundred years, as in the time of Noah, they would live a great hell. Back then they lived simply and lived for many years, so that the Tradition would be preserved. In the spiritual life, caution is needed. When spiritual people are driven by vanity, they are left with a void in their souls. There is no fulfillment, no fluttering of the heart, and as they grow in their vanity, the emptiness within them grows, and they suffer more. Where there is anxiety and despair, there is a Tagalist spiritual life. Do not be anxious about anything. Anxiety is of the devil. When we feel anxiety in our struggle, we should know that we are not moving in God's space. God is not a tyrant to suffocate us. Each one should strive with zeal, according to his strength, and cultivate zeal, so that love for God may develop. That is, one should not strive with sickly scholasticism, and suffocate after anxiety, struggling with thoughts, but should simplify his struggle and hope in Christ, and not in himself. Christ is all love, goodness and consolation, and never suffocates, but has abundant spiritual oxygen, divine consolation. If one simply moves, one does not get tired. But when egoism enters even a little, one tightens up, so as not to make any mistakes, and one gets tired.
