The documentary tells about the life and spiritual feat of the modern Russian saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco. This is the story of not just a saint depicted on icons. For the first time, telling about a holy man, we will show unique video chronicles and testimonies of contemporaries who lived and served with Saint John. Saint John was one of the apostles of the 20th century, who truly encircled the entire world with his prayerful feat: Russia, Serbia, China, the Philippines, France, the USA - these are the countries where our Russian saint lived and prayed in the 20th century. Contemporaries said about him: "He is an angel of God in human form." Father John served the Divine Liturgy and received communion every day. From the day of his monastic tonsure, he never went to bed, slept sitting, prayed all night long. Sometimes he was found in the morning dozing on the floor in front of the icons. He was an ascetic and a fasting person, he ate once a day, late in the evening, sometimes he forgot about food altogether. Children were drawn to him, they called him an angel... Archbishop John (in the world Mikhail Borisovich Maksimovich) was canonized by the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad 30 years ago. He was born in the Kharkov province in 1896, dreamed of serving God, but became a lawyer. In 1920, his family left Russia with Denikin's retreating army and settled in Belgrade. In exile, the future bishop managed to realize his dream: after graduating from the theological faculty of the University of Belgrade in 1925, Mikhail took monastic vows with the name John. In 1934, he ordained John as a bishop and sent him thousands of kilometers from Belgrade - to Shanghai, where more than 20 thousand Russian refugees lived. Arriving in China, the bishop gives away to those in need every penny that is donated to him, and distributes all his personal belongings, right down to his sandals. He walks around hospitals, slums, and prisons. At that time, stories of miraculous healings through the bishop’s prayers begin to spread; his fame extends far beyond the Russian diaspora. He builds a hospital, nursing homes, soup kitchens, a Russian school, an orphanage… In our film, we will show modern Shanghai and the memorial sites associated with Saint John. In Shanghai, the bishop’s house, the Cathedral built by the bishop, and the orphanage building have been preserved. From Shanghai, we will move to the Philippines, to the island of Tubabao. Local residents still pray to the Russian saint John of Shanghai. Remembering that during his reign, not a single typhoon hit the island, they pray to him for deliverance from natural disasters. In the film we will show footage from the Cathedral in San Francisco, where Bishop John served in recent years and where the relics of the saint rest, we will also show the first church in Russia (in the city of Tver), dedicated to Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco, as well as documents and personal belongings of the saint, which are kept in the museum "House of Russian Abroad named after Solzhenitsyn" in Moscow. Today, more than ever, the words from the sermon of Saint John are relevant: "A restored Russia is needed by the whole world, from which the spirit of life has departed and it is all shaking in fear, as before an earthquake. Russia awaits a Christ-loving army, Christ-loving Tsars and leaders who will lead the Russian people not for earthly glory, but for the sake of loyalty to the Russian Path of Truth." ... Saint John of Shanghai is an example of how to manage your life. The figure of this contemporary who became a saint will interest many, especially young people who think about the meaning of life, looking for worthy examples in today's difficult modern environment, when there are many temptations and it is always very difficult to choose the right path.
