In the third episode of their interview on the program “Witness to the Era,” #Ahmed_Mansour and former Iraqi intelligence chief #Fadel_Al-Azzawi discuss how Iraq made a mistake by expelling the then Iranian opposition figure #Ayatollah_Khomeini. This comes in the context of his assessment of the transformations that Iraq witnessed after #Saddam_Hussein assumed power, succeeding Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr. #Fadel_Al-Azzawi pointed out that Iraq embraced Khomeini when he came from #Turkey in September 1965, and granted him freedom of movement, but after the border agreement signed by Iraqi Vice President #Saddam_Hussein with #Shah_of_Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, under the auspices of the late Algerian President #Houari_Boumédiène, on March 6, 1975, which stipulated that the Iranians would stop their support for the Kurds in exchange for Iraq expelling Khomeini, he was asked to stop his activities against Iran from Iraq, and when he did not comply, he was asked to leave Iraq, so he left in 1978 for the French capital #Paris, and after several months, the #Iranian_Revolution took place, and he returned to his country on February 1, 1979, and established the Islamic State, and entered into a long war with Iraq. The guest considered it one of the major mistakes made by Iraq, as it could have been contained to become the tip of the spear that would achieve the interests of Iraq and the Arabs, instead of the #Sunni_Shiite conflict igniting in the region under international sponsorship in which #Israel participated. #Fadel_Al-Azzawi said that #Saddam_Hussein had been looking forward to the presidency since 1975, as he was a young man with charisma that qualified him to assume the position of president. Regarding the executions and the execution of a group of #Baath_Party leaders, led by Abdul Hussein Shehdi, on charges of conspiring against the party and the state, after #Saddam_Hussein assumed the presidency of Iraq in July 1979, the director of Iraqi intelligence confirmed that their number was not large, and that they were encouraging Hassan al-Bakr to continue in power. While #Ahmed_Mansour quoted various sources that those executed were five hundred, including a third of the members of the Revolutionary Command Council. The interviewer also confirmed that #Saddam_Hussein used to bring semi-educated people, some of whom did not have a primary education, and put them in senior positions in the state.
