The winter of 1979 was one of the harshest winters ever and also very fickle due to its alternating thaw and frost. Road and air traffic suffered greatly from black ice and the snowstorms that followed. Train services had to be restricted, especially in the three northern provinces, due to the nuisance of drifting snow. In the countryside of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe, several villages were completely isolated from the outside world by metres-high blown-up snow dunes. Soldiers were deployed to clear snow and provide assistance to the residents of snowed-in villages.
