On November 7, 2024, the last thematic lecture from the #DetektywistycznyBotaniczny series took place - Forensic entomology possibilities and limitations - which was delivered by Prof. Krzysztof Szpila from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruล. โ IMPORTANT - the lecture is intended for adults, over 18 years of age. The presented content may cause discomfort and difficult feelings. Forensic entomology is one of the dynamically developing fields of forensic biology. From the lecture we will learn, among others: โ what is the diversity of insects inhabiting human corpses and does the fauna of human corpses differ from that observed on animal carcasses? โ which of the seven golden questions of forensics does secured entomological material help answer? โ do insects accompany the decomposition of corpses, or is it they who carry out this process? โ what are the differences between the methods of estimating the date of death in developmental and successional variants? โ with what accuracy can the date of death be estimated based on entomological material? Examples of opinions on estimating the date of death based on entomological material, prepared for the needs of the justice system, were also discussed.
