The quarterfinal match of the 2008 European Football Championship between the national teams of the Netherlands and Russia took place on June 21, 2008, at the St. Jakob-Park stadium in Basel, Switzerland, and ended with a victory for the Russian national team under the leadership of Dutch coach Guus Hiddink in extra time with a score of 3:1. The match was refereed by a Slovak team of referees under the leadership of Luboš Michel. Russian Andrei Arshavin was recognized as the player of the match. The Netherlands team was the favorite of the match according to the majority of fans, experts and bookmakers. The Russian national team played in the playoffs of the World or European Championships for the first time in its modern history. The Russian team's advancement to the semifinals was marked by mass celebrations in Russia and other countries. This match is considered one of the best games of the Russian national team. The match turned out to be quite spectacular - in 120 minutes the teams made more than 50 shots at each other's goals. For Marco van Basten, this match was his last as head coach of the Netherlands national team - after the European Championship, he headed Amsterdam's Ajax.
