Roberto Mangabeira Unger is a Brazilian philosopher and social theorist. Born in Rio de Janeiro on March 24, 1947, he is currently a professor at Harvard University and has served as Minister-Chief of the Secretariat for Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil on two occasions. His work encompasses philosophy, social theory, and law, and has been cited by intellectuals such as Jürgen Habermas and Richard Rorty. At the core of his philosophy is the view that humanity transcends the contexts in which it is inserted, and each individual has the capacity to ascend to a better life. Unger postulates that social, political, and economic institutions should not be fixed, but rather open to experimentation and revision to promote individual and collective emancipation.
