The machine is specially designed for use in the meter gauge sector and is rightly called "CAPRICORN" as it can easily handle gradients of up to 70 per thousand and curve radii of up to 45 meters, so it can also be used on the Bernina Railway. It winds along rocks and crosses narrow tunnels to the firn and ice of the high Alps. Various modifications and innovations were implemented in the machine design, such as the supply of new ballast from a silo wagon attached to the machine, the smoothing of the formation and the installation of geotextile. Together with the R20RD grading and compaction machine, a modern and efficient machine combination is now in use in the meter gauge sector. All previous operations have been successful without exception, but have once again clearly demonstrated that the conditions on Swiss mountain railways are not comparable with those on standard gauge railways in Europe. For example, large stones and old foundations on mountain routes are the rule rather than the exception. The investment in the development and implementation of the CAPRICORN in favor of increasing the efficiency of operations in the meter gauge sector is therefore justified. System description The RM76 CAPRICORN ballast cleaning machine uses a chain to convey the ballast into the screening plant. The cleaned ballast is returned to the track bed. This efficient process protects the environment and resources alike. The contaminated overburden is conveyed and transported away on old ballast wagons. The RM76 CAPRICORN in combination with the MUNGG gantry crane system enables entire track renewals (including track and sleeper replacement) even during night closures.
