Every summer, very special visitors travel to Transylvania in central Romania: Transylvanian Saxons, members of a German ethnic group that was native here for centuries. During communist rule, most of them left the country. For years they have been returning regularly to visit their old homeland. And some stay forever. Anna and Horst Dengel live in two worlds. On the one hand, they live in Düsseldorf, where they have built their lives over the years. On the other hand, they are drawn several times a year to Sibiu, formerly Hermannstadt, in Romania. This is their old homeland, and they have a home there too. Since they arrived in Drabenderhöhe in the Bergisches Land in the spring of 1983, Germany has been the center of life for them and their family. But they still feel a close connection to the traditions and customs of the Transylvanian Saxons. They have been visiting their homeland again and again for years. This time with particular anticipation, because in the summer of 2024 the big Saxon meeting with a traditional costume parade and concert will take place in Hermannstadt. 15,000 Transylvanian Saxons from all over the world are expected. Angelika Baer, on the other hand, has returned permanently. She was only nine years old when her family left Romania, but she never felt at home in Germany. As an adult, she decided to return to Romania, to Transylvania. In an important role: As a Protestant pastor, she looks after the remaining small German minority and the numerous regular visitors. Here she feels like she has finally arrived in her search for a home. But coexistence between Germans and Romanians is not always free of conflict. Angelika wants to build bridges and get people talking to each other.
