After almost 3 years of construction, Gran Vía has reopened to the public. The modernisation works that began in August 2018 and should have finished in April 2019 have been delayed until today, mainly due to the discovery of archaeological remains in the station. The station now has a 2000 m² lobby (1200 more than it already had), a museum on the -2 floor dedicated to the history of the underground, an underground tunnel connecting to the Cercanías de Sol station and the Red de San Luis temple, not to mention the new lifts that make the station 100% accessible. In addition, one access has been restored. It is the one on Calle Montera, which was closed decades ago and has been reopened after the works. We can also see a large screen in the station lobby that informs users. Gran Vía was one of the first stations to be opened on the first section of the Compañía Metropolitano Alfonso XIII, between the Cuatro Caminos - Sol section, and was called Red de San Luis. A year after its inauguration on 17 October 1919, the station was renamed Gran Vía. During the Franco dictatorship, the station was named José Antonio, in reference to Primo de Rivera. Finally, in 1984, the name was changed again to Gran Vía. Its temple, which had existed since its inauguration, was dismantled in 1972 and taken to the hometown of architect Antonio Palacios, Porriño, in Pontevedra. Gran Vía station is located under the Red de San Luis, in the central district (Zone A, Madrid). It has accesses in Montera, Gran Vía and Fuencarral, plus its lift. The station stands out for being a pioneer in Europe, having new turnstiles and 4.0 vending machines. It is one of the 4 most visited Metro stations per year. I hope you liked the video!
