I read from Shincho Bunko's "Ninjyo Bushido". First published in "Kodan Magazine" January 1940 (Showa 15) Soushichi, a woodcarver whose enthusiasm had led to a dead end, is called by his former master Fujikichi and asked to do a job. Soushichi refuses without giving any explanation, and Fujikichi gets angry and bans him from going to the shop... [Main characters] Soushichi: A woodcarver with a reputation for his skill. Sanoya Fujikichi: The master carpenter who took Soushichi in after his parents and siblings died. Okane: Fujikichi's wife. Oyuki: Fujikichi's daughter. Banshi: The gatekeeper of the Hotta family. Kono Gondayu: A servant of the Hotta family. Hotta Bitchu no Kami Masatomo: The feudal lord. He highly values Soushichi's woodcarvings.
