Published in "Shin Shosetsu" in 1918. One year during spring break, Honma, a senior at university who majored in history, met an elderly gentleman on the train returning from Kyoto. As the two of them exchanged opinions about the historical facts of the Meiji Restoration over a drink in the dining car, the elderly gentleman began telling the unbelievable story that "Saigo Takamori is still alive today, and Saigo himself is on this train right now." Though Honma was skeptical, he accompanied the elderly gentleman to the first-class compartment in the car next to where Saigo was resting... Note) Akagi Getahira was a student of Natsume Soseki.
