After the traffic light coalition ended, the Bundestag will vote today on the vote of confidence in Chancellor Scholz. His goal: to lose the vote and enable new elections on February 23. A heated debate is expected in the Bundestag, because the vote on the vote of confidence is also an election campaign. Scholz wants to make a statement at the beginning. This is followed by a debate lasting around two hours. After that, the parliament will decide by roll call vote. This means that the voting behavior of each individual member of parliament will be published. No parliamentarian can therefore speak out anonymously for or against Scholz. The Greens have indicated that their members will abstain from the vote. The background to this is fears that AfD members of parliament could express their confidence in Scholz in order to cause chaos in parliament. If the vote goes in Olaf Scholz's favor, the Federal President can dissolve the Bundestag. The new election must then take place within 60 days. The Federal President has 21 days to make the decision. If Scholz "wins" the vote of confidence, contrary to his intention, he would have to submit a new motion for the vote of confidence. When deciding to grant the Chancellor's request, the Federal President must consider whether there is a politically unstable situation. The SPD, the Greens and the Union have agreed on February 23rd as the election date. The Federal President has already indicated that he considers this date to be realistic. The current minority government under Olaf Scholz will remain in office until a new government is formed. Political scientist Ursula Münch analyses the initial situation before the planned new elections and capital correspondent Dominik Rzepka puts the vote into context together with members of the Bundestag. ----- Here on ZDFheute Nachrichten you can find out what is happening in the world and what concerns us all: We provide insight into the world of news, explain the background and address social debates.
