In 1779, after the death of Mohammad Karim Khan Zand, the ruler of the Zand dynasty in southern Iran, Agha Mohammad Khan (reigned 1779–1797), one of the leaders of the Qajar Turkmen tribe, took action to reunify Iran. By 1794, he had eliminated all his rivals, including Lotf Ali Khan, the last king of the Zand dynasty, and re-established Iranian sovereignty over the former Iranian territories in Georgia and the Caucasus. In 1796 he was officially crowned as king. Agha Mohammad Khan was assassinated in 1797 and his nephew succeeded him. Feth Ali Shah tried to maintain Iranian sovereignty over his new lands, but was disastrously defeated by Russia in two wars (1804-13, 1826-28), losing Georgia, Armenia, and the South Caucasus. The reign of Feth Ali witnessed the increase of diplomatic contacts with the West and the beginning of the intense diplomatic competition of Europeans over Iran.
